Pupils set an example for openness      2018

The Goethe Secondary School in Ilsenburg impressively presented their contacts from all over the world on Europe Day.

Ilsenburg. During their yearly Europe Day, the pupils of the Ilsenburg Goethe Secondary School have also presented to the public what they associate with the euro and why the title “Europe School” in their school name is not just an empty title.

Throughout the whole year, you can see the azure blue flag with its twelve golden stars hanging in the school. The stars do not symbolize the founding countries – the number twelve is a traditional number which symbolizes integrity, completeness and unity. But it is not only the flag; it is also the deeds which connect the Ilsenburg School with the whole of Europe and, not infrequently, reach beyond the European continental borders.

According to statements from principal Stephan Kuechler, the European exchange program known as “Comenius” no longer exists in its original form, and the opportunities for pupil exchange have become lower. However, there are still many points of contact, which in part originate from the old exchange program.

The school is very closely connected with the association “Children’s Aid for Transylvania”, based in Stapelburg. The pupils support donation campaigns, as well as children and youth who come from Romania and live periodically in Stapelburg, and who are trained at the Goethe School.

Another part of everyday school life are the connections to France, Italy, Albania and Czechia, including a budding partnership with a school in Kremenets, Ukraine. The Ilsenburg School pupils also think about countries outside the European borders, as  proven by their contacts in the South American countries Argentina and Bolivia.

But a problem that is keeping all pupils and teachers engaged was also addressed on the Europe Day. Classmates organized a spontaneous donation campaign for 13-year-old Angelik Kobus, who was the victim of a severe auto accident a few months ago and who is still in a special clinic to this day, working hard to get well again.
